Our Virtual Tours shine a light on the amazing work going on all around the world protecting wildlife and communities. We wanted to create an experience that connects you with exciting projects and people in interesting places while we are restricted from travelling – ensuring we continue to have these projects to visit when life gets back to normal.
We would like to invite you to join us, in partnership with the Kilombero Valley Ornithological Centre, to learn about the vital work they do to protect the amphibians, birds, mammals, plants, and reptiles. Some of which are only found in this area.
Description
Project X Virtual Tour for Groups: Kilombero Valley Ornithological Centre
Based in Southern Tanzania between the Udzungwa Mountains National Park and the Selous Game Reserve, the Kilombero Valley is a global hot spot of biodiversity!
Our Virtual Tour lasts about an hour and is led live by Sebastian Ngasoma, the Director and Consultant Ornithologist at the Centre in Ifakara in Tanzania. We look at the different areas of conservation work that the Centre carries out and how that improves the environment in the Kilombero Valley. We also follow some video clips taking us on a virtual hike to the Njage Waterfalls! The tour ends with a unique opportunity to ask Sebastian questions about his project, the region, and the wildlife.
Who is this aimed at?
Our Virtual Tours for Groups are currently aimed at Scout, Guide, Explorer, and Ranger aged Youth Groups (ages 10-18). We are working on something similar that will be suitable for Beaver and Cub aged groups, please get in touch if you are interested.
What’s included?
- Approximately 1 – 1 1/2 hour Virtual Tour hosted on our Microsoft Teams environment
- Live presentation with our guest speaker Sebastian Ngasoma, with a Question and Answer session at the end
How do we join?
We will send you an invitation email that explains how the tour will work and what you and your group need to do to connect. All you need to do is send out the email to your group, everyone can then click on the link to join in.
For more details, please have a look at this document.
How do these tours help?
We are running these Virtual Tours in partnership with our friends at the Kilombero Valley Ornithological Centre in Tanzania. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic tourism has come to a grinding halt. Like many people who work with tourists and volunteers, this centre is in a situation where they may not be able to continue their amazing work in conservation, education and community work. These tours are a way of helping the centre showcase the work they do, but also a way of bringing in an all-important income, which will allow them to survive this pandemic and be there ready and waiting for when tourism and volunteering become available again. Without your help, they would not be able to continue their very important work.
Notes for Group Leaders
- We ask Group Leaders to join the meeting 5 minutes early so we can introduce ourselves and explain how the tour will work in a bit more detail.
- We will only share the link to join the meeting with you, so please protect this link to ensure that only your group members join the meeting.
- As our guest presenter joins us live from Tanzania, we are at the mercy of the quality of their rural mobile internet. We have tested a variety of solutions for these tours, including Zoom but we have found that Microsoft Teams provides us with the most stable connection.
- We have a video that we can play in the event that we get temporarily disconnected. In the unlikely event that we have a significant problem, we will work with you to reschedule for another date and time.

Thank you George for arranging a fascinating evening at the Kilombero Ornithological Centre with Sebastian.
During these difficult times of lockdown it was incredible to be able to take my Scouts live to Tanzania to learn about the wildlife and culture of the area.
For people booking remember that Tanzania is two hours ahead (BST) and being much closer to the equator it is dark by about 1830. The ‘tour’ was a series of presentations and videos. This was not what I’d expected (because I’d not considered the above). The presentations were very informative, although pitched at older Scouts and Explorers. The videos were very interesting and allowed our YP to see what the area is like in daylight and hear about some of the challenges faced by rangers in an area where the wildlife and humans live in such close proximity . What really made the evening however, was Sebastian’s knowledge and experiences as a local ranger, he really brought the evening to life..
I would definitely recommend this experience. It was not what I had expected, but it was still a five star experience. They are learning from each group and I provided them with, what I hope, was constructive feedback.
For £40 this is also one the best value activities i have done with my Scouts and I am additionally very pleased that a portion of the money goes to the Centre to support the rangers with their important conservation work in this fascinating area of Tanzania.

Thank you for arranging an enjoyable evening for our guides. The evening consisted of a series of video clips and presentations, which were very informative and interesting.
Sebastian has great knowledge of the area and the videos really showed what a beautiful place this is and made us wish we were really there. The girls really enjoyed learning some Swahili words and playing the game of guess which animal.
I would definitely recommend this experience! Thank you again.
